Where does Blackjack come from?
The true history of Blackjack has eluded researchers for quite some time now. They have no clear consensus on what the actual first version of this game was or where it started gaining popularity. Most of them agree though that French casinos around 1700 had a game called Vingt-et-Un which translated means twenty-one. They think it was derived from the French card games, Chemin de Fer and French Ferme, which were very popular in that period of time. Another version they know about is from Spain and was called “One and Thirty”. The basic rule for this game was to reach 31 with a minimum of three cards.
Another theory that is making the rounds is that it was first invented by the Romans. We already know that Romans loved to gamble and they even had sports betting on things like gladiator fights and horse-wagon races. Apparently they have wooden blocks of different numerical values which they used to play. It might be true but no one is entirely sure about it.
Among all of the versions of this game the French version eventually traveled to North America thanks to French colonists and soon enough it was played throughout the continent. The rules of that version of Blackjack though were different, only the dealer was allowed to double and there was a betting round between each of the cards being dealt.
The game still held the name of “21” when it started gaining popularity in Nevada in 1931 when the States made gambling legal. To attract more people to the table casinos offered a special bet. A hand which featured either of the black jacks (the Jack of Spades or the Jack of Clubs) plus the Ace of Spades would pay 10-to-1 odds on that particular player’s bet. Casinos eventually gave up on that weird payout but the name Blackjack stuck around and we all call it that nowadays.
Blackjack did not start at one certain moment and wasn’t created by a single person. It has evolved over the centuries and it continues to do so even today. Nowadays we have the internet which has fueled its popularity even more. Part of that is because it’s far more comfortable to play from your home instead of having to drive out to a casino. Another reason is that casinos keep innovating the game and creating new variants for it.
Online casinos have also created live Blackjack tables with real dealers. They use a special pack of cards which are far bigger than a normal one so that people who are playing can see them through the webcam better. So if you’ve never tried this game before there are plenty of options for you out there today. Whether you like the feeling of a live casino and feeling the cards and the chips in your hand or you prefer the comfort of your own home, be sure there is something out there for you.
