Is online gambling legal in Canada?
Canadians looking to play some online poker on Canadian territory might have to be on the lookout. Laws are still unclear on whether or not Canadian players are allowed to engage in such activities, seeing how regulations are not specific enough.
The laws are not yet caught up to include fast internet development and so this legal issue is left in a gray area, still. The problem lies with offshore online gambling sites that have nothing to do with the law of the land, but also do not do much in reinforcing the particular rules for each country they offer services in.
Another issue might be that these online casino operators pay taxes to the country they are legally licensed. And so Gibraltar, Cyprus and The Isle of Man have strict rules pertaining to online gambling and also make quite a buck out of the whole deal.
Michael Lipton, lawyer and gaming law expert from Toronto asserts that both laws concerning offsite companies offering online betting and ones pertaining to Canadian gamblers must be carefully looked over and perhaps revised.
He states that “As far as [he] is concerned, you as a player aren’t committing any criminal offence by being in a position where you are engaged with an offshore operator playing poker, playing slots, or whatever the case might be.”
What is not so clear is whether or not the companies accepting bets from Canadians are acting in a legal manner.
